Description
Atypical ulcers, such as calcinosis cutis, calciphylaxis, pyoderma gangrenosum, vasculitis, skin cancer, fungating tumors, and more are due to alternative etiologies and more challenging to manage than most chronic wounds. This presentation reviews the clinical presentation and treatment of several atypical wounds including red flags in the identification of wounds that may be caused by atypical factors. Completion of the presentation will leave attendees with an understanding of atypical ulcers to maximize positive outcomes for patients.

Laura Swoboda, DNP, APNP, FNP-BC, FNP-C, CWSP, is a family nurse practitioner and translational scientist at SkinGurus in Milwaukee, WI. Dr Swoboda is on the editorial board of American Nurse Journal, the official journal of the American Nurses Association, and WOUNDS journal. They represent North America on the International Skin Tear Advisory Panel and are President of the Milwaukee Metro Nurse Practitioner Association. Dr Swoboda has won two career lifetime achievement awards under the age of forty as a fellow of both the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the Wound Ostomy Continence Nurses Association.
